The stakes were carefully placed to avoid vital organs—a technique Drac had perfected over years of experimentation. Death could take hours, sometimes days.
Once the screaming subsided to wet gurgles and desperate whimpers, Drac's men would roast the village people alive while they were still impaled. The smell of burning flesh mixed with blood created a sickening perfume that clung to everything it touched. The victims' eyes would bulge, their skin crackling and peeling like ancient parchment held too close to flame. Children watched their parents cook. Parents watched their children transform into charred monuments to Drac's power.
Then, after the bodies were roasted to Drac Von Stoller's liking—when the meat fell from the bone with the gentlest touch—it was time to sit down for a feast. Drac's men would cut pieces off of the roasted bodies and eat and drink wine as Drac Von Stoller was cutting out the hearts of his impaled victims, squeezing every last drop of blood into his mouth. He would close his eyes in ecstasy as the warm crimson life force slid down his throat, savoring each pulse of residual heartbeat against his tongue.
The Dracs were cannibalistic by nature, and this was what made the villagers more fearful of the name Drac. The mention of his name caused grown men to soil themselves. Some villagers went mad from the constant terror, clawing out their own eyes or throwing themselves from cliffs rather than face the possibility of the stake.
