I hate to say this. But I couldn't finish it. I have put it down this morning. 50% I had been waiting for it to 'grip me' and its failed. If you like description of benign legal procedures in the sticks in the US, it might be for you. I know I shouldn't be reviewing really not reading the entire book, I believe something might happen with a odd fellow she meets early on in the story. But the book has bored me too much before getting there. Failure to launch comes to mind after reading this... sorry Grisham. I read A Painted House of his a few years back, was much much better in my opinion.

Though a page turner, it played out like a cat and mouse game mostly and no real payoff. The characters and the settings were interesting. The reality of coal country and strip mining was eye opening. The tragic lives of the poor in America and the fate of coal miners gave an emotional heft. So it would have been great if the story focused on Samantha's growth into a confident trial lawyer and winning a case for the Ryzer family. Would have loved her taking down the evil law firm and Trent. Instead the story meandered with Donovan, Jeff and their vendetta, sidelining the heroine's journey.

The beginning was great and I was hooked. It had potential but then slowly by slowly it became a bit entrenched and preachy. Yes I get the point that strip mining is bad, but it doesn't need repeating in every chapter. It just turned boring half way and I never even bothered finishing it. Can't be bothered.
