About this ebook

For once, he's met a lady who's just as reluctant to wed—and she's the only woman he can think about.

George Clavering is every bit the charming rake. While his older brother and younger sister have already married, George revels in a life of sporting events, lively wagers, and the excitement of London’s Season. Determined to preserve his bachelor lifestyle, he refuses to let anyone gamble on his future.

Then there's Lady Alice St. Clair, the fiercely independent fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr. With her own wealth and a sparkling wit, Alice has long scoffed at the idea of a loveless match. After five seasons of dull suitors and unconvincing proposals, she’s sworn off the marriage mart for good.

A chance wager at a grand ball sets their fates on a collision course. What begins as a playful contest soon blossoms into an unexpected connection that challenges everything they thought they knew about love—and themselves.

A witty, captivating Regency romance where two reluctant hearts discover that sometimes the greatest gamble is falling in love.

Lighthearted and entertaining, this enjoyable romance has wit, some suspense, and more than one couple finding their destiny. When may a gentleman engage in conversation with a lady he has not been introduced to? Why, when she is having a conversation with herself. As far as George was concerned, he had no choice in the matter other than to respectfully engage with Lady Alice in her discussion, and when that discussion resulted in a wager, how could he refuse? Unfortunately, there is a fly in the ointment who cannot bear to see anyone else finding happiness, and the sweet romance that develops is almost derailed. However, the book does come to a happy conclusion and I was glad that Lady Alice found her own destiny fulfilled. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This story can stand alone, but I appreciated the reappearances of other characters from the Clavering Chronicles and seeing their support of George as he takes his turn in the spotlight. Lady Alice and he are quite the pair of declared bachelor and unmarried woman of fortune - I enjoyed seeing them soften and come around to recognizing the benefits of turning to someone else. There were multiple other people's storylines to follow, which helped drive the plot while the interpersonal conflict and miscommunication challenges between the main characters were overcome. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

What can I say? Jennie Goutet has done it again! She has written a mesmerizing story with dialogue that sparkles, characters you grow to love and lots of fun, and scandal! I really enjoyed the story of George and Alice. It was a slow burn romance with lots of heart. The secondary characters really added to the plot and depth of the story. As ALWAYS, I recommend this and any Jennie Goutet book to anyone who enjoys a clean, well researched Regency romance with witty dialogue and heart melting moments.
