Teos jäi 30-vuotiaana kuolleen kirjailijan ainoaksi romaaniksi.Englantilaisen kirkkoherran tytär Emily Brontë (1818 1848) julkaisi Humisevan harjun (1847) salanimellä Ellis Bell, ja lisäksi yhdessä sisartensa Charlotten ja Annen kanssa yhden runokokoelman. Keskellä Yorkshiren nummia eläneet Brontën sisarukset löysivät kirjallisuudesta ja tarinoiden keksimisestä vastapainoa ja lohtua karulle lapsuudelleen. Vuonna 1847 ilmestyneestä romaanista on tehty lukuisia elokuva- ja teatteriversioita.
