Obwohl Schlegel im Titel seines Essays nur die griechische Poesie erwähnt, hat er im Grunde einen geschichtlichen Überblick über die griechische und moderne Literatur gestaltet. Er kontrastiert die griechische Literatur mit der neueren Literatur seit dem Mittelalter, die Klassik mit der Romantik. Griechenland dient auch ihm, wie vor ihm schon Winckelmann und nach ihm Hegel, als Ideal allen künstlerischen Schaffens. Für Schlegel war die "Griechenheit ein Bild vollendeter Menschheit und ihre Literatur ein Maximum und Kanon der natürlichen Poesie, als eine allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Dichtkunst, eine vollkommene und gesetzgebende Anschauung."
