Nelle foreste della Kirghisia, tra le montagne e un lago gigantesco, c’è un avamposto della forestale, un pugno di case affacciate sul torrente. Vi abitano tre famiglie e un bambino di sette anni – testa tonda, orecchie a sventola – affidato alle cure del nonno Momun. La sua fantasia eleva tutto ciò che ha attorno – acqua, sassi, paesaggio – a qualcosa di epico, quasi assoluto. Carezza le pietre del torrente – per ciascuna ha un nome – immagina di trasformarsi in pesce, nuotare fino al lago e incontrare finalmente il padre, marinaio sul battello bianco. Nonno Momun alimenta la sua immaginazione raccontando leggende: antiche battaglie lungo il fiume Enesaj, una grande cerva bianca che raccoglie due bambini smarriti e li porta lontano, per fondare una nuova stirpe. Un giorno, nel bosco appaiono tre cervi. Per nonno e nipote, una nuova scintilla di meraviglia; per gli altri, un semplice oggetto di contesa e di preda… Ajtmatov mette in scena una tragedia universale, lo scontro tra limpido e slancio vitale e bieca meschinità.
